TWENTY-NINE
GWEN
The following day, Gwen woke from the persistent ache in her headâalone. She looked around her room expecting somethingâshe didnât know what. Then it hit her as the events of last night rushed into sharp focus. What she was expecting was someone to be next to her. Noah.
She rolled up in bed, wincing from nausea caused by too much alcohol. Where was Noah? They had kissed last night. Then waited in the Jeep for the Uber after finding the garish message carved into the driver-side door. Noah had insisted she report the incident to the police. She pinched her eyes shut when she remembered cursing Adam out from the sidewalk as he left the bar, Noahâs hands anchoring her in place as she hurled insults at him. A knowing grin had spread over Adamâs face. It was so unfair. Why couldnât she just have a nice night with Noah without Adam ruining it?
She swung her legs onto the cool wood floor and noticed she was dressed in the same clothes she wore yesterday. Had Noah helped her to bed last night? The echo of her nasty words to Adam made her cringe, embarrassed.
Ready for the day, she shuffled into the kitchen in search of crackers and pain reliever. She had to work tonight, and she inwardly groaned. But she deserved the pain. She should have never drunk so much, but she was nervous around Noah.
âMorning.â Noah stood in the doorway in his jeans and T-shirt. He walked toward her, but once he caught a glimpse of her face, he hesitated and asked, âAre you okay?â
Had they kissedâor was it a dream? âHow did I get home last night?â
He laughed. âYou called us an Uber, and I carried you inside. I didnât realize you couldnât hold your liquor,â he said jokingly as she retrieved a glass of water. His eyes followed her as she moved slowly around the kitchen. Was that true? How could she not remember?
âIâm a little embarrassed to say I donât remember much about last night,â she lied. She tried to shut out the shrieking accusations and all her flailing limbs as Noah held her back, a faux look of shock carefully displayed on Adamâs face when he denied damaging her vehicle. He convinced the female police officer who showed up, but not Gwen.
âWell, thenâyou kissed me.â
âUm, I remember that.â She enjoyed that he wasnât blushing or uncomfortable with the proclamation. A promising sign that he didnât regret what had happened between them.
âAnd it was great, you told me.â
She smiled, too, despite the headache and shame. Was this guy too good to be true?
He slowly closed the space between them and dipped his head. His lips touched hers again, and the memory exploded into her mind. She could feel it on the streetâsomeone was watching them. Had it been Adam? Why was she so sure they werenât alone?
He let her go, and she steadied herself on the lip of the counter. âI think Iâm remembering some things,â she said as blood sang through her veins.
